The Bregenzer Wald covers one fifth of the whole area of the province of Vorarlberg and is located in the south east of Bregenz. The word indicates a wooded area although it is rather referring to the region. There are extensive forests, but the area is dominated by a grass landscape in the hill sides. Today the region consists of 23 villages with around 35.000 people living there in a typical rural traditional life. The most famous of the rather small villages are probably Alberschwende and Mellau. The mixture of traditional and rather modern architecture shows a very attractive overall picture of this region for its visitors. Both winter and summer tourism is equally important – skiing and other winter sports, hiking and cycling, rafting and canyoning as well as paragliding.
