Hochsteiermark is a modern term invented to give the eastern part of the Obersteiermark a touristic name. It is the second biggest region in Styria with the regional centres Leoben, Kapfenberg, Bruck an der Mur as well as Mariazell. It includes the Wiener Hausberge, the Semmering and the Hochschwab – all low elevation mountains suitable for hiking and cycling tours as well as rafting and canyoning and smaller skiing areas, ideal for people coming from the towns in the east of Austria and those who are winter sports novices.
