The Karpaten are European mountains connected to the Alps. The so called Pre-Carpatian area starts in the hillsides of Vienna and Lower Austria and extends eastwards to the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania. The most important town in the Austrian part of this region is of course the capital Vienna.
