The Waldviertel is the north western part of the province of Lower Austria (including a part of the Wachau which is situated north of the Danube). Most important villages are Gmünd, Waidhofen, Eggenburg and Schrems. The most famous touristic locations (apart from the Wachau) are pilgrim villages like Maria Taferl, other popular activities include hiking and cycling tours through the forests, passing castles like Rappottenstein, Ottenstein or the Rosenburg.
