The casual meaning of the Wienerwald refers to the wooded area around Vienna. However, in fact the word refers to the mountains in the east of Lower Austria, more precisely the far east end of the Alps. But still most of the landscape is forest. The region is a so called UNESCO biosphere reserve. Important villages are: Klosterneuburg, Mödling, Perchtoldsdorf, Brunn am Gebirge, Gumpoldskirchen, Baden and the Helenental and Purkersdorf. It is THE cycling and hiking area for the Viennese, sight seeing points are: castle Mayerling (suicide of crown prince Rudolf), abbeys Klosterneuburg and Heiligenkreuz and in Vienna the Lainzer Tiergarten (Hermesvilla) and the Höhenstraße, especially Kahlenberg and Cobenzl. Even the castle Schönbrunn was built in the wooded area of the Wienerwald, today it is in the residential area of the 13th district in Vienna.
