The Kitzbüheler Alpen are part of the Eastern Alps and have an east west range of around 80 km (around 2/3 in Tyrol and 1/3 in the province of Salzburg). Most of the famous tourist villages are situated in the Kitzbüheler Alpen (apart from Kitzbühel and St. Johann also Zell am See and Saalfelden in Salzburg or Wörgl and Kufstein in Tyrol – and many more – also check the Brixental and Zillertal). Kitzbühel is maybe the hottest of all Hot Spots in skiing tourism – not only in Austria, but the whole of Europe. The famous downhill race “Streif” is regarded as the most challenging downhill race in the world and attracts countless celebrities from all over the world every year (whether from Formula 1 or famous actors). Those who prefer calmer holidays are better off with St. Johann, which is nearby, very nice and more suitable for families (all villages have exciting summer attractions, too).
