Similar to the Rätischen Alpen the Rheintal borders 4 countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany and the Austrian province Vorarlberg. In an alpine valley one would expect a rather sparsely populated area. But the contrary is true: in fact the region is one of the most densely populated areas in Austria with the cities Bregenz, Dornbirn and Feldkirch (all of them recommended for a visit), as well as Lustenau, Hohenems, Altach, Götzis and Rankweil. Consequently city tourism is dominating the region around the river Rhein – apart from activities around the Bodensee or highly recommended hiking tours in the surrounding of these cities.
