The Wörthersee is the largest lake of Carinthia and because of the mild climate also one of the warmest natural alpine lakes (up to 28 degrees in summertime). The region around the lake is what Kitzbühel is for the Tyrolians in wintertime: a meeting point for the Jet set, especially the village Velden with its Casino. In case you have a new sports car or yacht, this would be the right place to show it off. Other famous villages are Pörtschach and Maria Wörth, but also the province capital Klagenfurt has lake access. A typical characteristic of the lake is its beautiful turquoise colour, which is coming from a certain algae plant found in the lake. The region is a paradise for all kinds of water sports, but you can also find nice cycling and hiking trails nearby, as well as a further 4 smaller lakes. Don’t miss out on the 100 m high observation tower in Keutschach with an amazing view over the region.
