Like the Karawanken the Karnische Alpen, too, are part of the Southern Kalk Alps, however, these mountains are building the border between the Austrian provinces Tyrol (Osttirol) as well as Carinthia and Italy (South Tyrol and Friaul). The valley on the Austrian side in Tyrol is the Gailtal (Gailtaler Alpen). The most famous village is Kötschach Mauthen. The region is famous for hikers and cyclists and it provides fantastic routes for motorcyclists.
