The Lungau is one of 5 parts (the so called Gaue) of the province of Salzburg. Politically the region is identical with the district Tamsweg (regional capital). Geographically it represents a high plateau between the Hohe Tauern and the Niedere Tauern, the region is connected via a tunnel on the highway (the Tauern Tunnel). The landscape is very diverse – from rugged mountains to gentle alpine meadows with cristal clear mountain lakes. An interesting topic is the climatic conditions of the Lungau: it is the region with the most hours of sunshine in Austria. The most important touristic area for skiing is Obertauern and the Katschberg region – which is also popular for summer tourism. The biking trail “Mur-Radweg” is regarded as the most beautiful river bike path in Europe.
