The diverse Nockberge mountains are the northern part of the Gurktaler Alpen. They are south of the Niedere Tauern and east of the Hohe Tauern and Gailtaler Alpen and border the provinces of Carinthia, Salzburg and Styria. The most famous skiing area is the Turracher Höhe. Instead of enlarging the skiing areas in the Nockberge the population has been in favor of creating a Biosphere Reserve protecting plants and animals of the region (like chamois, mountain hare, marmot or the ptarmigan) – the park is under UNESCO protection! Those who prefer getting away from the hectic everyday life might be interested in the romantic self-catering huts.
